eRez Imaging Server - Image Server
Empower your images with eRez Imaging Server 4.0 Struggle no more! With eRez image handling, you can take the work out of imaging. Based on the concept of “single source dynamic imaging”, the eRez Imaging Server 4.0 enables you to automatically generate an endless number of image variations and common file types from the same single master image. This greatly reduces errors and saves you many extra hours of work while dramatically reducing the number of images you need to manage within your company. Dynamic text and graphic layering Effectively communicate promotions, pricing and product information by layering database-driven text and/or artwork on images on-the-fly. You can even personalize promotions by tying in customer profile information to create a 1-1 targeted, designed offer – images, graphics and text. This means true 1-1 communication, better conversions and higher ROI in, for example, E-business. Technology supporting the eRez software For unsurpassed speed, availability and scalability, the eRez Imaging Server is implemented as pure Java and designed to run on any Java 5 enabled platform. An ICC compliant color management system guarantees consistent color fidelity across different media. The eRez Imaging Server can be installed on any server on the network including existing web servers. Language and lay-out can be fully customized by editing the html templates. User system requirements A standard web browser with support for JavaScript. No Plug-ins or applets required. Server System Requirements Runs on basically all Java 5 enabled platforms such as Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Solaris. We recommend a 2 GHz Pentium 4 with 1 GB RAM or better. Source File Formats For optimal performance, master image must be stored in TIFF, FlashPix or PSD format. In addition, JPEG, EPS, PDF, AI, SVG and optionally CAD (DWG, DXF and DWF) formats are supported as well as user configured formats and formats implemented by means of plug-ins. Real-time Formats JPEG, GIF, PNG, Flash, PDF and TIFF formats can be delivered “live” to any web page by means of simple http requests. A “Publish to Web” function enables quick and easy publishing of images on the Internet – as a single 2D/3D image or a Flash Slideshow, Showcase or turning Pages. Dynamic text and graphics can be added in real-time. Downloadable Formats Files can be rendered and downloaded as JPEG, TIFF, PDF or EPS files as well as the original. Embedded clipping paths, ICC profiles and IPTC information are fully supported. Additional formats can be implemented by means of plug-ins. Master image formats For optimal rendering speed, master images must be saved with embedded “Image pyramid” data. TIFF images with pyramid data are 100 % backwards compatible.

Your pictures are available 24/7 for download in every possible size and format - with all the risks of confusion eliminated. Efficient, inexpensive, easy - and great marketing!
FSI Pages Add-on for FSI Viewer and eRez Imaging Server
FSI Pages - Publish Dynamic On-Line Catalogs with Zoom Functionality Create a real time page turning experience with any catalog, image collection or other printed materials. Provides fast, effective and flawless image rendering and simple distribution of materials, with much better access to information than a real in-hand catalog can provide. Think about this: When you are reading a real paper catalog and you find that perfect sweater, you jump to your computer and go on-line to see more detail, and see if there is a bigger picture. In Pages you could just click on it and get what you want right now! Dynamic zooming and panning features in your on-line Catalogs FSI Pages Add-on presents a collection of images or pages of a PDF document like a printed booklet. The realistic page turning effect, the automatically generated page index and the proven interactive zoom functionality of the eRez imaging server and the FSI Viewer offers a fascinating way to publish catalogs and image collections on-line. With FSI Pages only a single high resolution source image or PDF per page is required. Time consuming image publishing becomes obsolete. With the eRez Imaging Server you can publish zoomable and panable on-line booklets with just a few clicks. You can create different booklet sizes and different page layouts without changing a single image – or simply make your booklet resizable to the user.
eRez CAD VieW – Present AutoCAD® files via the eRez Imaging Server
eRez CAD VieW – Present AutoCAD® files via the eRez Imaging Server The eRez CAD VieW offers flexible presentation of AutoCAD® files, allowing architects, engineers, etc. to present projects online in a quality never seen before with virtually limitless options for technical diagrams, download of sections from CAD drawings for presentation, general distribution of CAD files, etc. Online sharing and distribution of your CAD drawings and the ability to examine drawings in detail by zooming and panning each file are just some of the many possibilities that eRez CAD Viewer puts at your fingertips. The eRez imaging server makes displaying your CAD drawings intuitively simple. When displaying your CAD files via the eRez Imaging server, you can take full advantage of eRez functionality and flexibility: create a showcase displaying different sections of your building blueprints, make an online catalog to present the building project to investors, - or simply use it to share blueprints with the various building constructors, electricians, engineers or carpenters. When publishing CAD drawings as part of an on-line catalog, you can enable visitors to print the entire AutoCAD® image, specific layouts or partial details. Server requirements Windows 2003, XP, 2000 server.
FSI Viewer - Flash based Scalable Image Viewer- 2D and 3D Images
The eRez Imaging Server combined with the FSI Viewer is simply “the best of the best“ of online image viewing and offers a fascinating and easy to use solution for online viewing of high resolution 2D and 3D images. The Flash based FSI Viewer dynamically loads magnified image details from the eRez Imaging Server so that it is possible to present very high resolution images without requiring a broadband internet connection. Just like the eRez Imaging Server, the FSI Viewer can be seamlessly integrated into any web based solution, such as a Content Management or Digital Asset Management System.
FSI Showcase
FSI Showcase add-on- Puts High Resolution Image Galleries and Product Tours at Your Fingertips The FSI Showcase add-on integrates a resizable window (scroll pane) into the FSI Viewer, displaying automatically generated thumbnails of multiple high resolution images. Quickly show your customer a more complete range of product options without further effort on their part.
FSI Skins - Customized User Interfaces
FSI Skins - Customized User Interfaces The FSI Viewer comes with a neutral skin that blends seamlessly with the eRez look and feel. The user interface of the FSI Viewer is determined by FSI Skin files. All FSI editions ship with three different default skins which can be selected by parameters. With each skin you can customize many aspects of the layout, including the position of the menu bar and the survey window. If you prefer a customized user interface (to better fit the look and feel of your website) with different buttons and colors, different layouts or integrating your company’s logo, you can obtain additional skins by ordering the FSI-Skin pack or the FSI-Skin pack Plus. The “FSI-Skin Pack” contains 2 hours of time for skin adjustments for color changes and logo replacement. With the FSI-Skin Pack Plus you get an additional 6 hours of customization. The viewer can be customized further, to include buttons, the Intro logo displayed when the Viewer is loading, the menu bar, the info window, the view port or the survey window. Basically you can change the entire look and feel of the viewer
SOAP SDK for eRez Imaging Server
The SOAP interface of the eRez Imaging Server makes part of the eRez Imaging Server functionality available for programmatic access from other software packages. In the same way that humans can use the Web Interface of the server to retrieve information on and process images on the server, the SOAP Web Service can be used by software programs to retrieve information on and process images.
eRez Plug-in Development kit - extend eRez functionality
Plug-in Development kit - extend eRez functionality What is an eRez plug-in? An eRez plug-in extends the eRez Imaging Server functionality by running custom Java code within the eRez Imaging Server. The Plug-in Development kit can be used for developing java based plug-ins. The Kit includes java interfaces for: • Managing and handling new file formats, i.e. Quick Time movies • Event handling such as when files and folders have been added, modified or deleted. Also includes interfaces for setting event handler priority in eRez. • Interface for user authorization. About Java - Write Once, Run Anywhere - for real Java is a platform that allows software designed for an idealized "virtual machine" to run on a variety of real computers, including Windows PCs, Mac's, and Unix computers. The eRez application is developed using Java technology and open standards and is therefore immediately compatible with all platforms that support Java - which is to say all platforms. For our clients, this means that our development time and costs are reduced enormously and that we are able to support minority platforms just as well as the more common ones. Who can use the plug-in development kit The eRez Imaging Server is fully developed in the Java 5 programming language, the same goes for the plug-in development kit. Developing plug-ins requires Java programming skills. What can you build using the Plug-in development kit? Plug-in development kit can be used to develop solutions for 1. New file formats 2. Event handling 3. Synchronization with other systems 4. Automated workflow 5. User management New file formats eRez supports a range of file formats, but your organization may require eRez to hold, support and view a specific one, which is not supported by eRez. The development kit enables a developer to create plug-ins which supports new file formats. The development kit includes interfaces for reading and writing image files, as well as adding, extracting and editing meta data such as IPTC information in image files. Event handling Event handling is needed, if you want the eRez server to perform a specific task when some specific event occurs. This means that eRez can monitor folders and files and can respond to "change events" when new files are placed on the server, are modified or deleted. Event handlers may accordingly be used to send response i.e. notifying, querying or updating an external database when changes have been detected by eRez. Synchronization with external databases, ERP systems, DAM, CRM… Your organization may need to synchronize information between a database, an ERP system or some other system with information from eRez. Synchronization examples: • Developing a plug-in that enable eRez to inform your system that a new image has been uploaded and tell it to send an email to someone. • If an image is deleted in eRez, it could inform your external system to delete information related to the image. • You could keep track on how many megabyte or how many images a customer has, i.e. to trigger an event in some other system. • You could initiate a process when a new image is inserted. If you have a mirrored server setup, a copy of the image will be FTP'ed to a mirrored server. Automated workflow In an automated workflow setup, you may require eRez to automatically perform some task immediately after a specific event has occurred. Examples include: • eRez includes a JPEG image auto converter. Each time a JPEG image is detected it is converted to TIFF format, the TIFF is moved, and the original JPEG image is deleted. The JPEG image auto converter is developed using the plug-in development kit. • eRez currently use a plug-in utilizing GhostScript to convert a PDF file to TIFF images. Other external applications can likewise be enabled for specific tasks using the plug-in development kit. • Creating a variant of the image in some specific format and upload it to an external application or place it in a different folder. - What you get when you purchase the plug-in development kit The eRez Plug-in Development Kit is available to you for an annual fee*. When you purchase the eRez plug-in development kit, you will receive: • A unique developer ID key required for running a plug-in on an eRez server. • A zip-file with the java plug-in program code and documentation. • E-mail support from YaWah.com for one year. *Plug-ins developed within the annual fee period will naturally never expire.

YaWah Client Case Study - BON’A PARTE
Background BON’A PARTE retails men’s, women’s and children’s fashions created by their own Danish designers. The clothes are tailored to fit Danish sizes and in styles that vary from casual and romantic to sporty and trendy. One of Denmark’s most successful mail order operations since 1987, BON’A PARTE sells exclusive collections in Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. In 2001, the business was expanded with great success to include a webshop as an additional sales outlet. Today, e-trade represents more than 50% of orders. The webshop is designed to offer a special experience for a client base that would not normally be considered online shoppers. The webshop at www.bonaparte.dk is highly praised in the industry and is often cited as a reference for modern eCommerce solutions. The Challenge Online or in print, it is difficult to create the same shopping experience as in a bricks and mortar shop. The experience of details and of the quality of the products is difficult to convey in an online universe - especially in the case of clothing and other apparel. The challenge for BON’A PARTE was to re-create the physical shopping experience as nearly as humanly possible and at the same time offer the customer a unique experience that is not available from a printed catalogue. The Solution To provide webshop visitors a chance to get so close to the products that they can almost feel the texture and quality of the material and to provide the opportunity to draw attention to specific details such as, for instance, special stitching or a subtle floral pattern, BON’A PARTE chose to expand the existing zoom functionality. They required a highly configurable product that could easily be integrated into the webshop. From the user’s perspective, its design should match the rest of the site and be just as user-friendly and intuitive to use. For these reasons, BON’A PARTE selected the eRez Imaging Server by Yawah.com with the integrated Flash-based FSI-Viewer from NeptuneLabs GmbH. The eRez server offers the right degree of flexibility and simplicity that makes it possible for the company’s software developers to quickly create a solution that is fully integrated with the webshop. Collaboration with NeptuneLabs on the viewer itself also meant that the actual FSI Viewer was custom configured and designed specifically for BON’A PARTE in a single week. The Results Not only did BONA’ PARTE get the desired highly configurable and flexible solution that they required - the solution is also fully integrated with their webshop. The total integration of the eRez imaging server and FSI Viewer made it possible to implement the solution in the webshop with no changes required in the structure or programming of the shop itself. Although eRez and the FSI Viewer were implemented without BON’A PARTE publicizing the update, the solution was quickly noticed by customers as well as both the trade press and newspapers. ”We have taken another important step towards giving our online customers the same experience as customers have in ”real” shops,” declares Søren Sprogø, technical webmaster for BON’A PARTE A/S. -
Client Case Study - Bruun Rasmussen
Client Case Study : By implementing the “Single Source Dynamic Imaging” concept at Brrun Rasmussen the number of variations that needs to be created and maintaned for each image has been reduced to a single RGB master-image. From this master-image derived versions for printing, web and other uses are automatically created by the eRez Imaging Servers on-demand. Because all derived image versions are automatically created in a predictable manner and according to Bruun Rasmussen’s standards, the individual photographers are now fully in charge of the image quality.
YaWah Client Case Study - Brdr. Andersen & Trægården Kås
Client Case Study : Brdr. Andersen & Trægården Kås Background One of the largest building centers in the Jutland region of Denmark, Trægården Kås, is owned and operated by brothers Carsten and Torben Andersen. The company includes a heating stove center, kitchen/bath center, tile center and everything else for home improvement. In addition to Trægården Kås, the brothers also operate two major E-shops: www.barebilligst.dk and www.tgkshop.dk. Barebilligst.dk sells kitchens, bath-rooms and custom-made wardrobes built to the customer’s specifications via a specially developed module. Tgkshop.dk offers most of the product range from the building center with primary focus on gardening machines, firewood and electric tools. The Challenge Carsten and Torben Andersen have many years of experience in retail and are well aware of the importance of ”product placement” and ”space management.” Above all, they know the importance of the customer’s visual experience of the product. ”In our E-shops we noticed that customers often were reluctant to buy items where appearance matters, such as garden tractors, shower cabinets, kitchen components, etc. We conducted a customer survey that conclusively confirmed that customers want the best possible pictures of the products as a basis for the decision to buy, Carsten Andersen explains. Suppliers to the two E-shops were able to deliver high quality, high resolution images, but with literally thousands of inventory items, processing and scaling the many images seemed an impossible task. ”We started the search for a solution to this problem in the belief that what we needed was a system that could automate image processing for us. But our advertising agency steered us in a different direction,” Torben Andersen recalls. The Solution They chose the eRez image server from YaWah.com for several reasons: eRez can handle images from suppliers without any advance processing and is fully compatible with the webshop systems already implemented. Finally, it was of crucial importance that upload and subsequent integration of the images in the two E-shops could be carried out by the people who handle daily maintenance of the systems. eRez software is installed on a dedicated server maintained by A/S ScanNet. Torben Andersen elaborates, ”Basically we could have hosted the solution ourselves, but since we don’t have round-the-clock staff on our IT systems, we chose a more secure solution. The thought of our E-shops being without images for several hours because of something like a power outage at our facilities was simply unacceptable.” ”Today we have images of all the products that require them on the eRez server. We also use the ShowCase module to display variations of the same product, for instance different finishes for cabinet doors, various angles of the same product, etc. We have found that many of our staff frequently use the download function when preparing small Internet publications,” Torben Andersen adds. The Andersen Bros have designed two different skins for their FSI Viewer, so that design and identity match the two very different E-shops. The Results After the implementation of eRez for the two E-shops, there has been a significant increase in the average value of orders. It is clear that customers now feel safer about online purchases of relatively expensive products and products where design matters. ”We have saved a lot of money on image processing after introducing eRez - and a lot of time. Considering that and the fact that sales of more expensive products have increased, the eRez image server is a must, when it comes to selling visually-oriented products online,” concludes Torben Andersen.
YaWah Client Case Study - DALI
Client Case Study: DALI The savings on freight and handling alone mean that DALI’s imaging server paid for itself in a very short time. Furthermore DALI has obtained the valuable bonus effect of having its pictures exposed more than ever – and on a global scale.
YaWah Client Case Study - ROCKWOOL
Client Case Study: ROCKWOOL The centralisation of the image archives in the Rockwool Group has made it considerably easier to ensure consistency in the use of images, logos and other materials. It also represents significant savings that became apparent after just a few months with eRez. Feedback from individual divisions, press and advertising agencies around the world tell the same story: It is easier and faster to find the right image and deliver it in the desired format.
Documentation
Working with Digital Master Images
A Digital Master is an image, line-art, video or other kind of media file, created and stored in a way that ensures the highest level of reuse and re-expression. A digital master has not been prepared and optimized for a particular use, such as a printed magazine or use on the internet. It is a “mother” file from which variations for specific uses can be derived easily.

FSI Pages - Photo Album Example With FSI Pages you can easily publish photos in a zoomable photo album - with just a few clicks. With eRez Imaging Server and FSI Pages you can publish your photos by selecting a directory (or using a search query) and selecting "Publish as FSI Pages". Due to single source imaging you only need a single source image per page to create the album. FSI Pages requests all required image data for zoom, page index and different album sizes from the imaging server. You can optionally present a descriptive text along with each photo and add photo edges to achieve a realistic look of the pages. The page layout, colors and page numbers can be modified using simple parameters.

Press Releases
Innovative Danish Software Takes E-Commerce to the Next Level - eRez Imaging Server 4.0 - E-Retailers Choose eRez 4 for a More Hands-On E-Shopping Experience
Egå October 5th 2006 Press Release: Innovative Danish Software Takes E-Commerce to the Next Level E-Retailers Choose eRez 4 for a More Hands-On E-Shopping Experience After attracting headlines around the world last year in connection with their unique, record-breaking image server designed for the US space agency, NASA, the developers at Danish software firm YaWah have not rested on their laurels. YaWah.com are now offering version 4 of the acclaimed eRez image server. Specifically designed to address the problems of e-business, eRez is widely regarded by experts as a major breakthrough in enhancing the online shopping experience. While studies have shown that the most crucial barrier to the expansion of E-trade is the customer’s need for a hands-on, tactile experience of the product, few efforts have been made to address this issue constructively. Kristian Ottosen, YaWah CEO and chief developer, explains, “Our new eRez 4 is aimed at breaking down this barrier. Inspired by extensive feedback and close collaboration with Danish and international E-retailers, we have integrated a range of innovative possibilities into the software. For instance, price tags or other information can now be layered on top of an image without actually altering the main image on the server.” After implementing the new software, Internet retailers report increased sales of products viewed with zoom, 3D rotation, etc. eRez 4 software is in fact two solutions in one. It is an extremely efficient image database and, at the same time, a powerful engine that makes images available for viewing on websites with remarkable speed. A main advantage of eRez 4 is that it eliminates the need to have more than one version of the same image on the server. Because the software re-sizes and re-formats the image as needed by websites, the same image can be downloaded in virtually any size or format. Numerous YaWah clients have documented annual savings in time and reduced errors that are many times their initial investment in eRez technology. The latest version of eRez incorporates hundreds of minor and major improvements and innovations. Among the most significant revisions are the integration of information in images shown on websites, automatic generation of popular online catalogs direct from PDF files, automatic generation of Flash animations and a substantially upgraded user interface. Sales Director Ané Gyldholm explains, “An intuitive user interface for the non-specialist was a high priority and I have to say we succeeded. I personally created an online catalog with page-turning and text search functions in five minutes and I can assure you, I am not a programmer.” Yet another innovation is the handling of AutoCAD files via a plug-in, allowing architects, engineers, etc. to present projects online in a quality never seen before with virtually unlimited possibilities for technical diagrams, download of sections from CAD drawings for presentation, general distribution of CAD files, etc. The latest version of the legendary eRez image server from YaWah.com is now available worldwide. About Yawah Danish-based Yawah has rapidly become a global developer and supplier of crossmedia image server solutions. Building on over 30 years of accumulated experience, YaWah has a portfolio of clients in all fields that employ or work with images.

Danish Software Firm Conquers Japan
Press Release: Danish Software Firm Conquers Japan International success and recognition for the Danish software firm Yawah.com, based in Egå, Denmark, continue with the announcement of an agreement with Tokyo-based kitASP for Japanese distribution of the eRez Imaging Server. The agreement opens the technologically powerful Japanese market for Yawah.com. Kristian Ottosen, founder and CEO of Yawah.com, explains, “Our deal with kitASP is very exciting, because they have many years of experience in the sales of solutions to some of the largest Japanese corporations. And “large” in Japan means “huge”! KitASP has a strong network in Japan and can pave the way for major orders in their market.” KitASP was established in November, 2000 by, among others, NTT Data, Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi and Omron, making it a solid enterprise with strong owners. But Kristian Ottosen and his staff at Yawah.com take it all in their stride. In 2004, they prevailed against all competitors in the bid to deliver an imaging server platform for NASA, the US aeronautics and space administration. In 2005, the NASA contract led to an unofficial world record, as Yawah successfully handled 120 Gigabyte image files on the Internet (Just one of these images would require the storage capacity of 160 CD-ROM’s.) In 2006, Yawah.com supplied the complete imaging platform for World Press Photo. “We’re used to dealing with large-scale solutions and extreme demands on reliability. So we know that we can live up to the requirements of our new Japanese clients. But still, it is exciting, as well as challenging. We’re already working on a localised version in Japanese and the translation alone is quite a project,” explains a proud Mr. Kristian Ottosen. He continues, “KitASP handles some of the largest and most comprehensive web solutions in Japan. Because their concept also includes image handling, they required a solution that could feed images to websites in realtime – and also function as an image bank. We can do this with eRez, currently in version 4, and that’s why we were selected.” Mr. Toshio Matsuda, president of kitASP, adds, “The eRez imaging server is the only European software that we distribute in Japan. All our other external products are from the USA. We look forward to working with Yawah and to offering our clients what I would not hesitate to call the best imaging server solution on the market.” The fact that Japan is known as one of the countries that invest most in research and innovation makes it all the more remarkable that one of that country’s most acclaimed suppliers of web-based solutions had to turn to scenic Egå Marina in Denmark to find software that is sufficiently stable and innovative About Yawah.com Yawah.com is a leading developer of software for image management in connection with Internet retail and cross media. The company was founded in 2001 by Kristian Ottosen, after decades of experience in the development of imaging software. Yawah focuses on the simplification of cross media publishing, where high-quality images play a major role. The main product is the eRez Imaging Server which is available along with a range of plug-ins.
Dansk softwarefirma indtager Japan
Danish Software Platform Selected for World Press Photo 2007
Press Release: Danish Software Platform Selected for World Press Photo 2007 Since 1955, the World Press Photo Foundation of Holland has held an annual competition to select the yearâ™s best press photos. It is a major international event in its field with submissions from 4,448 photographers from 122 countries in 2006. Until now, participants have had to send their submissions for the contest and subsequent exhibitions either on CD or as actual paper copies. But beginning with World Press Photo 2007, photographers can now upload their submissions via the Internet. For upload, storage and display of the many thousands of photos, the foundation chose the Danish software program, eRez 4.0, developed by YaWah.com of Aarhus, Denmark. Michiel Munneke, managing director of World Press Photo, explains, âœThe World Press Photo competition is open to every single professional photojournalist from around the globe. We consider an investment in a web application an important innovation to give potential participants an additional way of submitting. Together with The Imaging Backbone, a web interface has been designed. Jointly, we have carefully chosen the eRez server developed by YaWah because of its robust and open architecture. We are extremely grateful that YaWah supports our competition with the latest technology! ✠YaWah.com launched the most recent 4.0 version of the eRez imaging server in October, 2006 with a long list of groundbreaking innovations. Imaging solutions from YaWah.com are available around the world. In the Netherlands, distribution and service of Yawah products are handled by The Imaging Backbone, suppliers of the eRez 4.0 solution for World Press Photo. Yawah.com CEO and chief software developer Kristian Ottosen elaborates,â We are proud to once again receive international recognition of our software. This event is of particular interest to us, as it gives thousands of photojournalists first-hand experience of our solutions and of the many possibilities that they offer. The reliable and open architecture of eRez 4.0 was the deciding factor for World Press Photo, because stability and ease of use are crucial in the uploading and handling of so many images by thousands of users with very different levels of technical insight.â Once the many thousands of images are safely stored on servers with eRez software, it is possible to zoom in and out of each image online. Colour management of the many photos is also handled by eRez 4.0. The World Press Photo 2006 exhibition can be viewed in locations all over the world until March 2007. About Yawah Danish-based Yawah has rapidly become a global developer and supplier of crossmedia image server solutions. Building on over 30 years of accumulated experience, YaWah has a portfolio of clients in all fields that employ or work with images.
Dansk software i spidsen for World Press Photo 2007

Press Release : Yet Another World Record for Danish Software - NASA Blue Marble Next Generation
Press Release October 2005 : Yet Another World Record for Danish Software. A few days ago, a set of images was made available online by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of The Blue Marble Next Generation Project. The set of images was collected by satellite over a 12 month period and features views of our entire planet, shifting snowlines, etc. The project concerns climate research, but the image series is worth a visit by anyone with an interest in weather and/or photography. A unique feature of the image dataset is that it consists of 120 Gigabytes – enough to fill approximately 180 CD-ROM’s – yet still can be viewed with zoom functions using an ordinary browser on an ordinary Internet connection. This groundbreaking achievement was made possible by the Danish software firm YaWah.com, who supplied an eRez imaging server to NASA last year for use in efforts against forest fires, natural disasters, etc. A group of NASA researchers realized that they now had the means to make extremely large image files available online and suggested that YaWah.com explore the possibility of breaking the company’s previous record in online image management, which was 2.6 Gigabytes. Kristian Ottosen, proprietor of YaWah.com, explains, “NASA contacted us a few months ago and asked outright if our software could handle 120 Gigabytes. That’s nearly 50 times our previous record, which was also a NASA image of the Earth. We accepted the challenge, which in fact only entailed a few tweaks to our software – and, of course, lots of room on the server.” The Project images are now online at the NASA website and can also be viewed at the YaWah.com website http://www.yawah.com/bmng It is impressive to see our world presented this way – and interesting to track the snowline’s movements over the course of a year. It offers a unique opportunity to zoom in close and actually see if there was snow in your home town during any given month. The Blue Marble Next Generation Project is just one example of how extremely large image files can be made readily accessible online. NASA also employs eRez to transmit highly detailed images, for instance to rescue workers during major natural disasters. “In such cases, speed and high resolution can literally be a matter of life and death,” notes Kristian Ottosen.
The eRez Imaging Server is a powerful standalone application – but it really shines when it is integrated as a component in a larger application such as a content management, digital asset management, e-learning or e-commerce system. And that’s what being an e-business component is all about. Canto Cumulus – Powered by YaWah.com. A good example of how eRez can be integrated with a digital asset management system can be seen right here.
YaWah.com Newsletter March 2002
Since the eRez Imaging server was released in November 2001 people have been busy changing their online use of static images to dynamic eRez images and eRez is now serving thousands of “live” images to end users around the globe every day. In case you have not yet had a chance to familiarize your self with eRez this is how it works: With the traditional “push” model one or more variations of an image is prepared in advance for each device or media on which the image is to be used. It’s not hard to imagine that this is a time consuming and costly process. The eRez Imaging Server fully automates this process by creating variations of a single master image on demand. With this Just-In-Time “pull” model only a single master image needs to be created and maintained. This saves both time and money in production – but also makes it possible to use “live” images on web pages. Live eRez images enhances the end user experience (read: sales) by allowing the user to freely zoom into and resize the images as needed.

eRez Imaging Server Example 1 - The Basic Image URL
The most basic way that an eRez server can feed images to an external web page is by replacing the URL pointing to a static image to with a request to the eRez server. The source image used in this example is a 2756 by 3780 pixel CMYK TIFF image and the eRez Imaging Server can render it at any size in real-time.
eRez Imaging Server Example 2 - Crop, Rotate, Clip and watermarks
By adding a few extra parameters to the Image URL the image can be cropped, rotated, have the background replaced by an arbitrary color and have a watermark applied. These are just a few of the many possibilities
eRez Imaging Server Example 3 - In-page Zooming
By adding a small JavaScript snippet the image can be made zoomable. Click on the image to zoom in. Shift-click to zoom out abd ctrl-click near the edges to pan around.
eRez Imaging Server Example 4 - Simple AJAX Viewer
With a little extra JavaScript we can build a simple Image Viewer.
eRez Imaging Server Example 5 - FSI Viewer
By using the optional FSI Viewer the Zoom experience can be greatly enhanced.
eRez Imaging Server Example 6 - FSI Viewer 3D Object
The FSI Viewer can even display 3D objects that can be rotated and zoomed from any angle.
eRez Imaging Server Example 7 - Flash Slideshow
eRez can publish the contents of a folder or the result of a search operation as a Flash Slideshow. The list of images to be displayed is updated automatically as images are added or removed from the server. This means that you can quickly add new images to the slideshow by entering a specific keyword or placing the image in a certain folder.
eRez Imaging Server Example 8 - FSI Showcase
eRez canpublish the contents of a folder or the result of a search operation as a FSI Showcase. The list of images to be displayed is updated automatically as images are added or removed from the server. This means that you can quickly add new images to the Showcase by entering a specific keyword or placing the image in a certain folder.

Bonhams Auctioneers, London, creates streamlined work flow with Enterprise level image server from Denmark
Bonhams Auctioneers, London, creates streamlined work flow with Enterprise level image server from Denmark. Bonhams is the world’s oldest and largest auctioneer of fine art and antiques, (still in British ownership), and is the fastest growing and third largest international auction house with over 700 auctions annually. Bonhams has developed an internal web delivered application that enables its staff, (In place all over the world) to produce contracts for vendors of items coming up for auction. A contract includes all the information necessary for setting up an item for auction, including images of the item. Historically the images were captured on film, and then scanned, and low resolutions were resized by a special application to produce two different sizes of each image. Other images captured by digital camera were run through the same application, but nothing was scalable. Global IT Director Roland Whitehead, Bonhams: "Then eRez came to our aid. It took only two days to get it running. eRez is pretty central for our operation, from storing to resizing, embedding PID´s (Product Identification) and resizing for print production." Bonham’s produces a huge amount of original pages, which are available on the web and as printed catalogues of items coming up for auction. Bonhams use a Progress database with stock detail and contract information for all vendors. Each contract and item has a number and each item has an image. Images are coming in from all over the world, and the database saves a pointer to the locally stored image. A Perl script then uploads the image from the local machine to one of two eRez image servers based in London and San Francisco, where a SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) call is run telling the eRez server to produce a pyramid TIFF file. Finally, the image is stored in appropriate folders, one for optimized pyramid TIFF images and one for the original files on the eRez image server. The folders correspond to paths specified in the database. Images are stored in different sizes: "There are 'full bleed' A3 and 'normal' A4 images stored in 300 dpi, as well as 'happy-snappy' images which can be massive", says Roland Whitehead. Presently Bonhams stores 3 terabytes, equivalent to 1.5 million image records, on its image servers! Bonham’s is adding 14 terabytes of storage replicated in 2 physically separated Storage area networks for their London site. With a 3GHz twin dual core server Bonhams expects to see even more images served through their eRez serve
German Aerospace Center and Xparo, Germany makes CMS work with high performance image server.
German Aerospace Center and Xparo, Germany makes CMS work with high performance image server. Xparo in Germany has developed a web solution based on .NET and APIs for the German Aerospace Center (DLR - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) integrating the eRez Imaging Server with the CMS (Content Management System) ContentXXL. It is critical for Web authors to get the right resolution of images when they write articles in the CMS. And to enable authors to call the right image resolution for their articles, images are stored on and requested from an eRez server by ContentXXL through a SOAP interface. (Simple Object Access Protocol) Xparo has developed this interface via the eRez SOAP Plug-in SDK, which allows users to select any image from eRez. The user interface to the eRez image server as seen by the users has the same look and feel as the ContentXXL interface. "We implemented all the functions of eRez" tells software developer Nina Hofmann from Xparo "It was quite easy – we even had a new SOAP message implemented for this project. We use search for files, list the content of the server, we create collections and print jobs too. It is quite easy to work with." The new website of German
