NASA’s Blue Marble Next Generation - Yet another World Record for YaWah
Last month, a new set of images was made available online by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of The Blue Marble Next Generation Project. The set of images was collected by satellite over a 12 month period and features views of our entire planet, shifting snowlines, etc.
A unique feature of the image dataset is that it consists of 120 Gigabytes – enough to fill approximately 180 CD-ROM’s – yet still can be viewed with zoom functions using an ordinary browser on an ordinary Internet connection.
NASA contacted us a few months ago and asked if our software could handle 120 Gigabytes. That’s nearly 50 times our previous record, which was also a NASA image of the Earth. We accepted the challenge, which in fact only entailed a few tweaks to our software – and, of course, lots of room on the server.
The result can be viewed at http://www.yawah.com/bmng.
